Tropical Medicine and Hygiene

The Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) is a specialised one-year, full-time postgraduate programme. It is designed for medical doctors with a keen interest in tropical medicine, infectious diseases, and public health, especially within the context of Africa and other resource-limited settings.

Overview

The Postgraduate Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) combines the long-established tradition of tropical disease study with current knowledge and practice. It prepares healthcare practitioners to respond to present-day challenges in tropical health, including infectious diseases and parasitic conditions.

The Wits PG DTM&H is the longest-running qualification of its kind in Africa and offers students current knowledge in tropical medicine and infectious diseases.

A combination of webinars and self-directed study supports flexible learning while ensuring the syllabus is fully covered. Weekly live sessions encourage continued interaction and accommodate participants with different schedules. The programme remains responsive to developments in the field, helping to maintain a current and relevant learning experience. It has remained highly regarded by students for more than 80 years.

This programme equips doctors to address the modern challenges of tropical health related to infectious diseases and human parasites. The curriculum is presented in a structured and progressive format, with focused teaching throughout the year.

The programme is open to doctors who hold a medical qualification from a recognised medical school in any country and who are registered to practise medicine in that country.
