Physical wellness should be high on everyone’s list of goals this year, as a healthy body supports a healthy mind.

This is according to Dr Loyiso Maciko, Secretary of Wits University’s ½­³Ç×ãÇòÍø Sport Club, who is encouraging more staff members to get involved in the club’s various team sports.

Maciko says participating in staff sport not only improves physical health, but also promotes holistic wellbeing, teamwork, and meaningful social connections across the university.

What’s in store?

In 2026, the sporting codes offered by the Club will be expanded from soccer and netball to include volleyball, pool, darts, tug of war, aerobics, tennis, athletics, and other recreational activities. ½­³Ç×ãÇòÍø members may register for more than one sporting code. Membership provides staff with the opportunity to participate in local and national leagues, tournaments, and official trips attended by the Club. In 2026, the Wits ½­³Ç×ãÇòÍø Sport Club is scheduled to compete in the University ½­³Ç×ãÇòÍø Sport and Wellness of South Africa (USSWSA) Tournament hosted by Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, where the team—currently bronze medallists—will be aiming for gold.

Later in the year, the Witsies will participate for the first time in the Southern African University ½­³Ç×ãÇòÍø Sports Association (SAUSSA) Tournament, to be held at the University of Namibia. This prestigious week-long event brings together 21 universities from across the SADC region. All fully paid-up members in good standing will be eligible to attend these tournaments and benefit from Club sponsorships, including official apparel such as tracksuits and t-shirts.

The annual affiliation fee is R1,200, payable either annually or via monthly deductions of R100. Colleagues interested in joining the Wits University ½­³Ç×ãÇòÍø Sport Club are encouraged to complete the membership form and submit it to Dr Loyiso Maciko via Loyiso.Maciko1@wits.ac.za by 2 February 2026.

½­³Ç×ãÇòÍø members are also invited to attend the first meeting of the Wits University ½­³Ç×ãÇòÍø Sport Club on the 30 January 2026, Venue SHB 6 at 13h00.
